In the city of Fairfax, Virginia, another lawsuit is in full swing, in which actor Johnny Depp hopes to sue his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million for defamation. She, in turn, intends to sue him for 100 million. This is not the first process: the story has dragged on for six years, with no end in sight. The careers of both artists are in fact destroyed – their names are now associated with the public not with a great film, but with juicy courtroom details. Drugs, drunkenness, fights, insults, cut fingers, soiled sheets, psychiatric diagnoses, that’s all. Depp is no longer called to blockbusters: scandals have cost him roles in the next series of Fantastic Beasts and Pirates of the Caribbean. And the last film with Hurd was released in 2019 (in 2023, however, Aquaman 2 should be released, where she will again play the superhero’s lover – but that’s it, no more projects seem to be visible). And it seems that the ex-spouses will not calm down until they bite each other.

To start, let’s remember how it all developed.

June 2012. Johnny Depp announces that he is separating from his wife, French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis. They had been together for 14 years, they had a daughter and a son. Almost immediately, we learn that Depp has a new romance – with his partner in the film “The Rum Diary”, 26-year-old actress Amber Heard. His career is booming. Until recently, she mainly got supporting roles (although in such notable films as Pineapple Express and Welcome to Zombieland), and now she plays the main roles, her partners are great actors – Harrison Ford, Nicolas Cage, Kevin Costner.

February 2015. Depp and Heard make the wedding official.

May 2016. Like a thunderclap – a message that Depp beat his wife. Amber Heard says: “I endured a series of inhumane emotional, verbal and physical abuse from Johnny.” He is often subject to paranoid suspicions, and in a state of rage it is very scary.” According to her, on April 22, Depp missed a party that his wife was throwing on the occasion of his 30th birthday. Or rather, he came to see her – but very late, very drunk, and pushed her to the ground. After that, Amber did not communicate with Johnny for a month. And then, on May 21, there was a scandal harder.” Johnny picked up a cell phone, reached out like a baseball player, and threw the phone at me forcefully, hitting my cheekbone and eye.” He seemed to continue screaming, pulling Amber by the hair, beat her, until a friend arrived, whom the unfortunate woman managed to call. And then the police arrived. However, the cops claimed that “the person who reported the domestic violence” (this is i.e. Amber herself) “asked not to be recorded and provided no evidence”.

However, soon Amber filed for divorce and then announced the beatings, attaching to the request her photo with a bruise on her cheekbone (the place where the iPhone allegedly fell off). The court issues a ruling that Depp is prohibited from approaching his wife within 90 yards.

August 2016. Rumor has it that upon divorce, Depp will have to share half of his $400 million fortune with Amber Heard. However, in the end, a deal was made whereby he only pays her $7 million (Amber claims he’s going to spend it on charity).

January 2017. The divorce proceedings are over. It is reported that in addition to seven million dollars, Depp left animals to Amber Heard: two Yorkshire terriers and a horse. But all of the assets Depp owned, including homes in Los Angeles and Paris, as well as a private island in the Bahamas, remain at his disposal. Movable property (and this, among other things, an impressive collection of vintage motorcycles and cars) – too. The couple make a joint statement: “Our relationship was extremely passionate, sometimes turbulent, but always defined by love. We never even intended to hurt each other physically or emotionally.” It would seem that everything is over, but in fact everything has only just begun.

April 27, 2018. The Sun newspaper publishes an article with a highly publicized subtitle: “How can JK Rowling be ‘perfectly happy’ that wife-beater Johnny Depp starred in his Fantastic Beasts movie?” It seems the pathos is directed at the writer’s statement, but Depp is furious. The words “battered wife” were removed from the newspaper’s website and did not appear in the print version which came out the following day, but the scandal cannot simply be extinguished.

June 2018. Depp sues the newspaper for defamation and at the same time claims she was the aggressor in their relationship with Heard. In the process, details emerge, each more picturesque than the next. According to the actor, on April 22, 2016 he did not hit his wife, but vice versa. On the day Amber turned 30, her husband, instead of attending the gala dinner, climbed into bed and started reading. According to him, Heard tried to yell at him, so he just decided to retreat to the bedroom. But she got to the bed, where she kicked him hard, rocking with all her might. And later, either Amber or one of her friends defecates in their bed. Then Hurd said it was just a “harmless prank” – but Depp thought differently: It was after this incident that he finally decided to separate from his wife. In addition, it was reported that in 2015, Amber Heard allegedly threw a vodka bottle at her husband, it broke, and Depp cut off a piece of the middle finger of his left hand with a fragment. It was found on the kitchen floor by Depp’s personal chef. (The surgeons managed to reattach the finger). Lawyers for the actor say Hurd cheated on him and occasionally used alcohol and drugs.

However, the lawyers of The Sun newspaper were not born with a bastard. They state that from early 2013 to May 2016, there were at least 14 incidents in which Depp attacked Heard in some way. He threw various objects at her, pushed her, beat her, pulled her hair, tried to strangle her with his hands or a pillow, destroyed her things, etc. He once started a feud with a woman he thought was flirting with his wife (Heard told the world she was bisexual in 2010) and then went after Amber. As for the finger, Depp appears to have cut it off for himself in a drug binge.

November 2020. After more than two years of litigation, the court concludes that 12 of the 14 incidents have been proven and that the information in the Sun article is “substantially accurate”. The verdict is 129 pages. Four days after the announcement of the verdict, we learn that Depp will not play in the third part of “Fantastic Beasts” – Warner Bros. decided to replace him with actor Mads Mikkelsen. Fans collect 150,000 signatures demanding it be returned, but the studio isn’t changing its decision. In parallel, a million signatures are collected on a petition asking to withdraw Amber Heard from the sequel to the film Aquaman (no reaction from the studio either). Depp tries to appeal but fails.

April 2022. Another case begins in Fairfax, Virginia. Depp filed a lawsuit (this time personally against his ex-wife) in February 2019, after he published a column in The Washington Post about domestic and sexual violence. It follows from her that she suffered this same violence, and it was in her relations with Depp (at least, the actor made such a conclusion). In August 2020, Hurd filed a counterclaim, claiming it was her ex-husband who organized the campaign to strip her of her role in Aquaman 2, as well as an advertising contract with L’Oreal.

Process started April 11, and every day everything flares up there. The journalists rub their hands: as witnesses, they promise to attract movie stars (James Franco, Paul Bettany, Ellen Barkin), as well as Elon Musk, with whom Amber Heard had an affair after her breakup with Depp.

In the meantime, Depp’s witnesses claim that he periodically had to hide from his wife. Amber’s former personal assistant, Keith James, is on Depp’s side, saying he was always “peaceful, calm, shy… a real southern gentleman”, but Hurd was belligerent. And besides, she periodically launched suspicious speeches about drugs such as ecstasy, cocaine and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Depp himself claims that he never beat his wife, but she turned his life into “an endless series of insults and beatings”. (Heard’s lawyers claim the exact opposite: that Depp repeatedly subjected his wife to “physical and sexual abuse,” and now he’s trying to destroy her career with his humiliating lawsuits, “turning the case into a soap opera.” )

already on trial Dr. David Kipper testified. A few years ago, he was hired by an actor to provide round-the-clock assistance in his fight against several types of drug addiction at once: cocaine, benzodiazepine and opioid, as well as alcoholism. This struggle was given to the actor with great difficulty: he refused to take medication and repeatedly fired Kipper when he tried to force him into treatment. Which, of course, doesn’t paint the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star. But, on the other hand, Kipper didn’t notice any evidence that the actor was beating his wife. (By the way, it was Kipper who was the key witness to the story of the severed finger. He then administered first aid to the actor and took him to the hospital. At the same time, according to him , Depp told Ambulance doctors that he had accidentally cut his own finger with a knife, and a few days later he texted her saying the same thing).

Depp’s sister Christy Dembrowski, said the actor just couldn’t beat Hurd. He himself was abused by his mother as a child and has since sworn not to lay a hand on anyone, at least in the house. But Amber was rude to him, called him a “fat old man” and was furious when he, and not her, was offered to collaborate with fashion house Dior (Depp advertised Sauvage eau de toilette) : “It’s a question of class and style, but you have no style!

Featured (already, by the way, not for the first time) text messages that Hurd sent to Depp, as well as audio recordings of conversations. There she openly admits that she hit him. And LAPD officer Melissa Santz recalled an incident in May 2016, when Depp allegedly threw a cellphone at Heard – and said when she spoke to him at the time, there was no knock sign. Just the actress was very tearful.

And the icing on the cake: said psychologist Shannon Kerrywho examined Amber Heard in December 2021, spoke with her for a total of 12 hours and revealed two personality disorders at once: borderline and hysterical. But post-traumatic stress disorder (which Hurd says she developed following her marriage to Depp) was not found.

But so far, it’s mostly Johnny’s witnesses talking. No doubt Amber had already raised her weapons and prepared a series of no less deafening volleys. It’s interesting, of course, what Elon Musk will say. And in general – how do you like it, Elon? ..
