Fernando Rapallini and Facundo Tello have been confirmed by FIFA to lead the World Cup in Qatar.

With them, four national assistants have been chosen and Mauro Vigliano will integrate the selection of the VAR authorities. In addition, in a historic event, three women referees will take part in a World Cup for the first time.

Today, the FIFA Referees Committee announced the lists of names of referees selected for the World Cup which includes 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 Video Match Officials (VAR).

Massimo Busacca, FIFA Refereeing Director, assures that the referees will receive all the necessary support from FIFA, as their preparation is paramount.

Three women referees, for the first time in a World Cup

For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the Referees Committee of FIFA has also appointed three female referees and three assistant referees.

They are: Stéphanie Frappart (France), Salima Mukansanga (Rwanda) and Yoshimi Yamashita (Japan). Meanwhile, assistant referees Neuza Back (Brazil), Karen Díaz Medina (Mexico) and Kathryn Nesbitt (USA) have also been selected.

“We are very happy to appoint female referees for the first time in the history of a FIFA World Cup. This concludes a long process that began several years ago. In this way, we make it clear that it is the quality that counts for us and not the sex said Massimo Busacca, FIFA’s director of refereeing.
